Golf

A golf ball on a tee Golf is growing faster in France than anywhere else in the world with many excellent local courses that welcome visitors. With elegant clubhouses and comparatively empty courses, it represents a visiting golfer's paradise, especially with affordable green fees. In Brittany, the choice is wide with scenic courses to suit all skill levels. All the courses are within easy travel distance of La Maison Magique.

One of the best courses in Morbihan is Golf de Saint-Laurent at Ploemel near CARNAC. It was established in 1975 and is attractively laid out among oak, pine and chestnut trees. It hosted the French PGA Championship in 1988 and 1989. Its broad, gently undulating fairways and well-kept greens will encourage your game.

Golf de Baden, set amongst pine trees and broom next to the Auray River, offers superb views separated from the practice area by 100 year old oak trees. Beware, however, of strategic water, which affects play on 9 of the holes and concentrates the mind wonderfully. The pitch and putt practice course welcomes all beginners.

The nearest course is Golf de Rimaison, at Bieuzy-des-Eaux, only 10 minutes drive from us. (Tel: 02 97 27 74 03). Situated on a historic site, this 9 hole, par 35 course provides panoramic views of the Blavet Valley. A naturally hilly situation tests skill rather than strength. Golfers of all handicaps can enjoy playing the game all year round.
9 holes, 2,582 yards, par 35

Val Quéven, near Lorient, is a splendid course set amid beautiful woodland. Not quite as difficult as some of the other courses in the area. It has excellent facilities which include good lunch time food, covered range and pitch and putt.
18 holes, 6,724 yards, par 73

The parkland course at Ploemeur-Ocean enjoys fine views from its elevated situation. Though only seven years old it plays like a much more mature course. There are plenty of water hazards here to catch the unwary.
18 holes, 6,410 yards, par 72

Rhuys-Kerver is an enjoyable links course with an attractive club house.
18 holes, 6,724 yards, par 73

La Bretesche is a magnificent course, and something of a legend in French golf. The closing holes are particularly memorable.
18 holes, 6,649 yards, par 72.

FISHING ON THE RIVER BLAVET

Pleasurable and relaxed

A golf ball on a tee The banks are uncrowded and peaceful. In this slow-moving river there are carp, bream, roach, pike, trout and zander. The local fishermen are extremely friendly and are always willing to advise on the best fishing places. The fish are unpressured and most likely previously uncaught so strong tackle (15lb BS) is needed for landing the large carp. With hundreds of overhanging trees, lily pads etc. there are large carp to be caught which fight very hard! Permits can be bought in the Hotel de la Vallee in the bar just two minutes from La Maison Magique. There is a large angler’s shop in Pontivy where the English speaking proprietor is very pleased to welcome and advise our English speaking angling guests.

A short, 20 minute drive takes you to Lac du Guerledan, the largest lake in Brittany where, in addition to superb fishing there is an area reserved for water sports and other water based activities. If sea angling is your interest then the many rocky coves along the south Brittany coast are a sea anglers paradise.

In summer 2005 a father and his twelve year old son regularly caught over 20 pounds of fish in 2 hour morning fishing sessions, and on one particular morning 64 pounds of fish! Mainly perch and bream, and some salmon.
